Dennis Hoelscher Needs Your Help!!!!

Someone had a vision of the future, as the photo of the motel with the cars shows a 56 Buick, however in those days cars came out traditionally in Sept of the year prior to the model year.
I remember well as a kid on Saturdays walking up and down University Av looking in showrooms at the new models.

Can we name all the new car dealers from Rice  St. to Fairview?

I will give a start.

On the No side of the street just West of Rice was a Ford dealer, Saxon?  or was that a later name?

On the S. side, just west of Dale, the Nash/Rambler dealer, was the name Kaiser Motors?
Purvis would know that one, his dad worked next door at the liquor store, kiddi corner from Fire Station 18.

I believe next to the Nash dealer was a Studebaker dealer?

On the N. side, one block E. of Lexintion was a Dodge/Plymouth dealer, name?  Possibly Koppy (there was a
Koppy motors in S. St. Paul I believe.

There may also have been a dealer across the street (S side)?

On the N. side, two blocks W of Lexington was a dealership that was Volvo, what before that I do not remember,
it was the building next to the car wash, and W of it and a neighbor was Whitaker Buick.

Of course on the N. side, one block W of Hamline was Midway Chev.

One block W. of that was Kline Oldsmobile, and either next to it, or possibly the same building was Arrow? Pontiac.

The next two dealers I know were on the S side at Fairview, on the East side of Fairview was Midway Ford, and
across the street was Fairview? Chrysler.

What have I missed?  We are talking only about new car dealers.

Okay folks, fill in the blanks, or make corrections.

50
Years

Shown are John Picha and me (Gary McLean) working on AV equipment to be used at the 50th Reunion. We will be providing all of the audio/ video equipment.  By using our own equipment we will be able to put the money saved as a result (several hundred dollars) back into the 50th Celebration.  After about 4 hours we think we have the act together.  John has a vast array of equipment to select from.  See you at the 50th!!!

Highlights of the July 11, 2011 Steering Committee Meetings:

Holiday Inn Visit:  A sub-committee of the Steering Committee met with Jenny Herte of the Holiday Inn to familiarize ourselves with the room layout and further develop the many finite details needed for our reunion.  Although there is still much to do, we are confident this will be an event we will be proud to host.

Steering Committee Meeting: The following committee members met at the home of Carole Yaeger Fey after the Holiday Inn visit:   Doug Baker, Terri Wallace Ellisen, Carole Fey, Dorothy St. Marie Frnzen, Gary McLean, Judy  Hammon Oelekers, John Picha, John Purvis, and Linda Benesyk Rappath.

Reservations and Bios:  Dorothy Franzen reported that as of July 11, there were 70 reservations that came by mail, with 13 coming in through the website. At this time, there are 42 Bios in.  Linda has been formatting the Bios to be camera-ready for booklet printing.

The conversation moved to how best encourage those who have yet  responded.  It was decided that there will be another mailing for those who have not done so.

Program Committee:   Doug, Gary, Dorothy, John Picha, and Terri reported on their preliminary outline.  More details will be presented at the next Steering Committee Meeting.

The next Steering Committee Will be held on August 18th at the home of Terri Ellisen.

Highlights from the June 21, 2010,
Reunion Steering Committee Meeting
(Below)

The Steering Committee met on June 21 at the home of Doug and Kay Baker. Attending were: Diana Anderson, Doug Baker, Pat Bjorklund, Lance Bolter, Tom Coil, Gary McLean, John Picha, Dorothy St. Marie Franzen, Dick LaShomb, Linda Benysek,Rappath, Terri Wallace Ellisen, Carole Yaeger Fey,
and new members Judy Hamann Oelkers and Gary Dowd.

Contacts: As of our meeting date, we had current information on all but 32 classmates.

Reunion Dinner Location: The sub-committee has put in many hours researching options for the dinner,
which is the Main Event for our Reunion. The challenge has been to plan a venue that will be reflective of the special event a 50 Year Reunion is, that includes more than a dinner, and with a cost that will be appealing to our classmates living both in-and-out of town.

Bio Book: Diana and Linda reported on their ideas on the Bio Book. The book will be included in the cost of the Reunion ticket.

Save the Date Card: Sub-committee members Linda, Carole, Pat, and Terri met before the regular committee meeting to design the Save the Date card to be sent out to all classmates.
The goal is to have the card sent in September.

Next Meeting: Monday, August 2 at the home of Gary and Margaret McLean.

Steering Committee meets May 10, 2010

The Steering Committee met on May 10, 2010, at the home of Terri Ellisen with the following committee members attending:  Diana Anderson Smith, Doug Baker, Tom Coil, Gary McLean, John Picha, Dorothy St. Marie Franzen, Linda Benysek Rappath, Dick LaShomb, Carole Yaeger Fey, Terri Wallace Ellisen, and Pat Bjorklund whom we welcomed as a new member to the committee.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF:  Locating and updating current contact information for classmates is critical to the success for our 50th Class Reunion. Committee members worked very hard on this project and we feel we have good data on all but 7 classmates.  Our special thanks to Jeanette McDonald whose help in tracking down the "hard to find" will bring the word of our 50th to many members of our class who may not otherwise have been contacted regarding this special event.

We are connected.  As a result of this effort we now have over 100 working e-mail addresses for the Wilson Class of 61.

WHERE AND WHEN ARE WE GOING TO CELEBRATE THE 50th?   We're still researching possible locations for the reunion.  We had a very positive response from classmates saying "they'll be there”.  We want to make sure that we select a venue that will comfortably accommodate everyone.   We're also considering additional fun-filled events.

Committee members are gathering information to bring for consideration to our June 21st meeting. A discussion of timing centered on early September, possibly the weekend after The Minnesota State Fair.

SAVE THE DATE CARD:   Carol Yaeger Fey, Pat Bjorklund, Judy Hammond Oelkers and Terri Ellisen will be meeting on June 21 (before the meeting of the whole group) to put together some draft ideas for committee consideration.

NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING:  June 21 at the home of Doug Baker.

GOOD NEWS:  Gary reported that the Web Site has gotten 73,000+ “hits” since May!  Our e-mails are presently being sent to 72 classmates.  We’re on a major campaign to collect e-mail addresses.  Committee members will be making many phone calls over the winter months to verify information.  We will be asking for e-mail addresses, verifying mailing addresses, making sure you all have the Website address, and trying to obtain a sense of how many to plan for.  (E-mail addresses provide a very cost-effective to disseminate information.

GENERAL DISCUSSION included additional ideas on the reunion weekend events, location for the “Main Event” (dinner), cost for attendees.  Gary McLean put together a tentative budget based on our preliminary thoughts.  Committee members will be working over the winter months and reporting back at our April meeting.

Notes from the 50th Class Reunion Steering Committee Meeting

                                    Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Ten classmates from the Class of '61 and two special guests from
 the Class of '59, Jim
Beuelspacher and Jerry Callinan, met to
officially get the ball rolling in preparation for our 50th Class
Reunion.  Steering Committee members attending were:

 Diana
Anderson/Smith, Doug Baker, Lance Bolter, Tom Coil,
Gary McLean, John Picha, John Purvis, Dorothy St. Marie/Franzen,
Terri Wallace/Ellisen and Carole Yaeger/Fey.  Denny Hoelscher
 was unable to attend.

 THE CLASS OF '59:

Jim and Jerry provided an in-depth review of  how they organized their
very successful class reunion held August 22, 2009
at the Fort Snelling
Officers' Club.  Other members from our committee also reported positive
feedback on recent reunions held at the Officers' Club.  Because it is a
private club, military sponsorship is required, which Jim agreed to provide
for our class.  In addition to the dinner  ($50 per person for the buffet -
delicious food and lots of it) and a short program, they  organized a
Wilson High School Tour (cost for the custodian - "sponsored" by Tom
Picha - "Homeroom Pages" from THE LOG were posted). 4)
A Sunday  coffee, rolls, and conversation get-together was also part of
the weekend and was held at Jim's condo party room.  Classmates could
attend one or all of the reunion events.  It seemed to be just the right amount
of activities.

Jim and Jerry shared the following suggestions in case we decided to duplicate their events:
1) Group photo would have been nice at each event.
2) Recruit "sponsors" for each event:
3) Do-It Yourself name tags for all events  but the dinner.
The dinner should have prepared name tags.
4)  Make sure the initial mailing has very clear directions as to  what is included in the initial cost.
5) St. Paul Public Schools' Graphic Department printed their booklet.  Excellent product!
Their preliminary meeting was held June 28, 2008
- 14 months before the actual event.  At that time,
they developed a Save-The-Date Card which included their website, dates of events, etc.  The most
critical task was to locate classmates, which became the expertise of Jerry (who no-doubt will begin a
career as a missing person detective when his golf game wanes!).  The result was that they found all but
four classmates.
A second mailing included a flyer with more detailed reunion events, tear-off registration
form for the events and payment, a request for bio-info, and an outline of how to write a bio.
One classmate volunteered to prepare all bios for the booklet, which included synchronizing the fonts
so they were uniform for the booklet.

Our sincere appreciation to both Jim and Jerry for their time and expertise.  Thanks to them, we are truly off
to a good start!

The Class of 61 holds first planning/Social session (8/26/2007)

Several members of the 40 Year Reunion Committee got together
to socialize and Blue Sky about our 50th Reunion in 2011 (mostly socialize).
Three main items were discussed:
        (1)  Get feedback from other classes celebrating their 50th to find out what
worked well for them.

  (2)  Encourage additional classmate's suggestions and involvement to make
the 50th the wonderful event it should be.  You can submit your thoughts and ideas
by using The Log, Class of 1961 Reunion Planning e-mail link.  GET INVOLVED.

                                                    We want your input.

       (3)  Start the search now for missing classmates.  Your help is needed.  Check the list
at Help Us Find.  If you know the where-abouts of anyone on the list, go to
Contact US
/Help Us Find link and submit the information.  Thank you in advance.

Dear Classmates,
The Wilson all classes luncheon will be held on Wednesday, November 3, at the Old Country Buffet in Maplewood across White Bear Avenue from Maplewood Mall. This is about the last luncheon before the snow birds begin migrating. I will escort any and all who want to go to Denver on November 15. I will be driving a Honda Accord filled with Christmas presents for our children and grand children. Happy trails to you all.
Classmates that who have left us.

Laurence J. Kress
October 14, 2010
Preceded in death by Wife Evelyn Raasch.
I have been gradually informing all the classmates I can of my being unable to continue these E-Mail messages. This is the last message to 844 classmates. I will be in Denver when the December message should be sent out. After that I will be working on my perennial corn project as told in a message sent out in July announcing the August 4 meeting. I will not be at the December meeting but hope to attend as many meetings as possible in 2011. I have scheduled all the meetings with The Old Country Buffet for the first Wednesday of each month through December. I have given all the books and records to John King, who has been a faithful attendee at almost every luncheon. All messages are going out as cc which will give each class a copy of my current E-Mail addresses . I think we have the most loyal and vibrant high school luncheon in the twin cities. Lets keep it that way.

Dear Classmates,
The Wilson all classes lunch will be held at the Old Country Buffet across from Maplewood Mall on Wednesday, October 6.  The doors open at 10:30 AM and you can stay as long as you like.  We had about 70 classmates in September and expect a number of out of town classmates this Month.  The address, if you want it, is 3000 White Bear Avenue North.
I was able to attend the reunion of the class of 1960 and got a copy of their reunion book, Thank you.  There were over 100 classmates having a great time.  I was unable to stay but there are 78 new addresses in my address book which I got out of their reunion book.
I was also able to attend the class of 1942/43 reunion and obtained six new e-mail addresses from them.  The unfortunate thing that happened was Lorraine Johnson was choking on a part of her steak.  Finally the paramedics were able to take care of it and she returned to the reunion.  I met a fellow flyboy from WWII and had some conversation with him about flying.  I don’t know if there is anyone left that knows the size of the huge tarmack circle that the navy pilots used to use for touch and go landings.  There may be a little left of the circle at Fleming field in So. St. Paul.  I would guess the circle was about 800 ft in diameter.  I have about 12 pictures of their reunion which I will bring to the luncheon.

August 26th, 2010

Dear Classmates,
Next Wednesday, September 1,  I expect at least a couple of classmates from the class of 1955 to attend our luncheon at the Old Country Buffet In Maplewood.  I attended their 55th reunion at the Shoreview Hilton Garden Inn on Tuesday, August 24.  There were 101 classmates and their guests attending a very gala affair.  The conversation was abundant.  You could just about hear the people you were trying to converse with.  I guess I should heed my audiologists suggestion that a hearing aid would open up a whole new world of hearing for me.  An active activity was the awarding of several gift certificates to the persons who could keep a hula hoop off of the ground for one complete circuit. The suggestion was made that this should not be the last get together as was announced in the invitation to attend this year.  A practically new Juke box complete with our kind of records played quite a bit.  If any one wants to rent one let me know or contact a 1955 class member.
Other reunions.

Please put in a notice about our reunion for the classes of '42
and '43 for Friday, September 17th 3-7 PM at Mancini's.  Contact Char Alberg at 651-474-5725.   Cost $26.00

Class of 1943
Grant,  Shirley A. (Nelson)
A dedicated wife, fulltime loving mother, gracious hostess and kind-hearted woman Passed on July 5. She was born February 7, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota. At Wilson H. S., she met her lifelong love and companion, Donald C.G. Nelson. After graduating spring 1943, they were married in June. Mom followed Dad thru training until he was deployed to Europe. During his time away she worked in Arden Hills at the munitions plant. After the end of the war, the two started working on family and Dad's career. The final tally was four boys: Greg, Jeff, Steve and Kevin. Mom spent the next 30 plus years riding herd on four healthy but rowdy kids. Through the early years the family lived in Gainesville Florida, Lexington Kentucky and New Orleans Louisiana finally returning to the Twin Cities Area. Dad traveled for the majority of that time leaving Mom home alone with the gang. Through both quiet and stressful times Mom steered the ship. All benefited from her kind but firm touch. Along with being a mother, Shirley also served as a gracious hostess for Dad and his business acquaintances as he rose through the ranks to become CEO of Ellerbe Architects. She also became his travel companion throughout the country and on several overseas trips. Double duty was a long haul but Mom came through with a kind smile and a generous spirit as retirement started. Retirement summers were spent in Bemidji, Minnesota. Mom ran a "resort" for the boys and their families on Lake Beltrami. Festivities climaxed every year with the Fourth of July fish fry. Son Jeff was nearby to help with Mom and the house. Winters were in Grand Cayman. Both Mom and Dad enjoyed the quiet laid back atmosphere and friendly hard working folks on the island. Mom, a member of Pouchie Memorial Church, Northside received great comfort from the church after Dad's passing in fall of 1995. For the last three years Mom has spent summers with her son Steve and his wife Jeanne in Oronoco quietly enjoying the Minnesota summer and the friendly neighbors.Through the years Shirley has been a loving and dedicated wife, a kind and caring mother, and a good friend for all in need that knocked on her door. Shirley A.Nelson Feb. 7, 1925- July 5, 2010. Survived by: brother, Bob Grant and wife, Sis, Yuma, Arizona; sons,Gregory J. Nelson and wife, Sherida J. Nelson, Houston, Texas. Jeffery A. Nelson and wife, Kerry Nelson, Bemidji, Minnesota. Steven T. Nelson and wife, Jeanne Nelson, Oronoco, Minnesota. Kevin S. Nelson and wife, Linda Nelson, Somerset, Wisconsin. 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grand-children and 1 great-greatgrandchild. A Celebration of Life for Shirley A. Nelson will be held at 10:30 AMSaturday, July 10 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 857 Rolling View Ln SE, Pine Island, Minnesota. Memorials preferred to donor's choice.
Dale Warner
Of Wayzata Died at Home on July 2nd His family was gathered around his bed. He was almost 85. Dale was born on July 4, 1925, in St. Paul, Minnesota. His parents, Gus and Esther Warner, were Swedish immigrants. Gus drove a streetcar; Esther worked from time to time for a family on Summit Avenue. In Dale's words, "Went to Wilson High School and graduated in the spring of 1943. Two weeks later was called into the U.S. Navy. Went to several naval schools and ended up at Great Lakes with quartermaster rating. Shipped out on the USS Manadnock CM9, a mine layer. Ship came back to be refitted for the invasion of Japan. Couple bombs were dropped and the war ended. Did spend Christmas of '45 in Sasebo, Japan. "Signed up for GI Bill. Free schooling-everything-at U of M. Majored in education. In August of '46 heard anyone could go out for football. Two years later was playing for Bernie Bierman. It was a wonderful team: Billy Bye, Bud Grant, Gordie Soltau, Vern Gagne, Leo Nomelini, Clayton Tonnemaker, Jim Maloski, Ken Biersdorf, Bill Thiele. What a bunch. "Met a cute coed named Ann Cosgrove. We were married in 1950. Had seven children: Amy, Libby, Molly, Bradley, Lucy, David and Deacon, and sixteen grandchildren. All were above average. "Loved tennis, golf and gardening. Supplied neighbors as well as the Woodhill Country Club pro shop with tomatoes. "Must tell you about one day playing with son David at Woodhill Country Club. I had birdied the first three holes and the 4th hole is a par 4, about 400 yards long. One of the toughest. My second shot landed on the green, but rolled into a bunker in back of the green. I took my 56' sand wedge and by golly it went in. Four birdies in a row. Phil Reith, our great pro, said it had never been done before. How about that. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on July 7 at the Woodhill Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations to Non Violent Peace Force, 425 Oak Grove Street, Minneapolis, MN, 55403.

Now comes the hardest part of this entire message.  I retired a long time ago but now have to go back to work.  I will be doing research for Pioneer Seeds Inc., a division of DuPont Corporation International.  The reason is because there is a real world threat of starvation coming in the next few years. Stem Rust of wheat has reappeared in Africa and has the threat of  reducing the yields of wheat from 20 to 100%.  Wheat is one of the three major food crops of the world and before 1970 was a huge problem for the wheat farmer.  I can remember at age 12 to 17, on my Grandparents farm, walking through the wheat fields and being covered with the spores of wheat.  These spores born by wind have been proven viable and infectious up to 5000 miles, ie worldwide. My research will be in corn which I did a lot of in the 1980’s.  When wheat gets scarce and the price goes way up,  many corn acres will be diverted to wheat.  Therefore I have to pick up where I left off  get back into agronomic research.  This will include travel and priorities and I  will not be able to do anything with the Wilson Lunch except an occasional meeting.  I will try to transition to other younger people as much as possible until the December meeting.  Please accept my apologies for what must be.  I have announced this to several of the classmate members in the last two months but this is official.

March 31, 2010

Dear Classmates,
The monthly Wilson High School all classes lunch will be held on Wednesday, April 7th,  at the Old Country Buffet in Maplewood.  At 12:45 I will be honored to introduce Mike Anderson for a short talk and Q & A about the St. Paul Public Schools Foundation.  You remember several years ago we had two dinners down town for all the schools alumni.  We can find out where he fits into this equation. Here is his announcement.        The Saint Paul Public Schools Foundation is coordinating a city-wide tutoring initiative – the Tutoring Partnership for Academic Excellence to increase the quality and quantity of tutors and tutoring programs in Saint Paul. Over 5,000 students in Saint Paul need tutoring assistance in reading and math. Evidence shows that tutoring works. Just one hour a week is all it takes to become a tutor. Mike Anderson, the Foundation’s Executive Director, will join us on April 7th, to discuss the Tutoring Partnership and what Wilson alumni can do to support academic success for students in Saint Paul Public Schools.
You can learn more about the Foundation and the Tutoring Partnership by visiting their website at www.sppsfoundation.org.  It will be interesting to see how many of our classmates are tutors already.  I know of one for sure.

Dear Classmates,

The monthly Wilson High School all classes lunch will be held on Wednesday, March 3rd,  at the Old Country Buffet in Maplewood.  How many of you know or belong to the greatest generation?  Hamline University and the Minnesota historical Society have been working on recording the history of these people on DVD.  What was it like to grow up in the 30’s and 40’s.  Did you serve in the armed forces in the great War?  Record it for posterity as some of the richest historical experiences known to man.
We have our own experiences and they begin with 7 obits of classmates.

Dear Classmates,

The monthly Wilson High School all classes lunch will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd,  at the Old Country Buffet in Maplewood.  Since I am incapacitated from having an hernioplasty on January 18, I might as well sit at my computer screen and write this letter.  Wrong! No it is time to get the message out and time to do this in batches with rest in between.  Really, I am doing quite well and didn’t stay a day in a hospital.

Charles H. McCarty (Bert)
Of White Bear Lake Died Tuesday, January 5, 2010 after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's disease. Known to many as "Bert", he was born on October 9, 1933 in St. Paul. Charlie was a Master Plumber, inventor and patent holder, commercial realtor, owned many businesses, was member of St. Paul Plumbers Local 34, lead youth athletic clubs, coached hockey and baseball and had the highest batting average in St. Paul during high school. He spent his 76 years living in 18 different cities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. He leaves behind his loving, patient wife of 34 years, Connie, seven children: Gerald McCarty, Doreen McCarty, Brian McCarty (Bonnie), Lynn Browne (Dennis), Charlotte Niven (Mike Boisen), Shannon McCarty-Caplan (David), Charles V. McCarty (Heidi Stager), 14 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, sister Patricia Streck, in-laws George & Lois Jenkin, Rob & Bonnie Linder, Marsha Jenkin & Scott Seal and Lily, the lovable English Bulldog. To donate to the Lewy Body Dementia Association in Charlie's honor, visit: www.lbda.org. Thank you to all of the family and friends who have supported us through Charlie's illness.
We are in the doldrums as far as attendance at our luncheons is concerned.  Talked to Bob Lang today in Mesa and tried to contact Dave Gaulke but Bob Nilles said he fled the cold too.  Many classmates are trying to find Wilsonites to get together with down South.  Take this as an advantage.  Cultivate new and different conversations and you will really enjoy the monthly luncheon.

Think of it this way.  Being “over the hill is so much better than being under it”

Dear Classmates,
Sorry I’m late is getting old but I was in Denver for Thanksgiving. The Wilson all classes lunch will take place on Wednesday, December 2nd at the Old Country Buffet in Maplewood.  The 38 inches of snow falling in Conifer, Colorado and the 12 inches in Broomfield, CO should have kept us up North, but we weren’t going to miss 35 lbs of turkey because of a little snow.  Wilson people are a little nuts.  So try a long lunch to start out December.

We know many of our classmates have siblings.  This is where you might be able to help the class of 1961.  Maybe a bit of detective work will turn up a missing classmate.

We know it is probably not realistic to think we can send out Class of 61-50th Reunion invitations to 100% of our classmates; however we have set a goal to come as close to that as possible
This is where you can help!!!
Of 260+ seniors, we have located 189 (have address etc. for), 25 classmates are deceased (Gone but not forgotten) and listed below are 46 we still need to find.

Who among us has ever done an Iron Man?  The statistics are, 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles on a bike and run 26.2 miles.  A good friend of ours did this twice in the last two years.  His heart was only 26 year old (evaluated) despite age 54.  He collapsed with cardiac arrest eight weeks ago.  Someone was right behind him and began CPR.  Six days later he was home better than new with a single large stent.  I think everyone should know how to get help and do a few chest compressions, 100 per minute.  That what saved Bob’s life.
I can give a blow by blow at the next meeting if you ask.  But, at the next meeting get a classmate or friend to come to the Old Country Buffet.  Larry Carlson 1945

It was interesting to join the class on 1949 as they celebrated 60 years.  There was a great group including Bob Peterson who helped me do research with my perennial corn project at the U of Minnesota.   I cannot start on that as I could talk all day.  They were having a great time as there were first timers there not seeing a classmate in 60 years.
You can prevent that from happening to you by coming to the all classes lunch Wednesday.  Call another classmate and make it a meeting from your high school class.  Larry Carlson 1945

Benz, Robert Otto Paul Of La Jolla, California Formerly of St. Paul "Bob," as his friends knew him, was a loving husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He passed away on July 21, 2009. His parents, Otto & Harriet, raised Bob with his cousin Ginny Norstrem in St. Paul, MN. Bob kept in touch with many of his Minnesota friends throughout his life. Two words describe Bob Benz, "automatic friend." In 1963, Bob graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a Master's Degree in Business and soon thereafter joined the Marine Corps in Camp Pendleton, CA, in charge of dispensing supplies, where he made many friends. Early in his career Bob was a communications pioneer, selling beepers, two-way radios and some of the very first cell phones for Motorola. Many of Bob's best friends in life came during his days selling beepers. But his biggest challenge in his life was raising his three stepsons, who became his boys with his wife of 31 years, Sonny. Bob was the equalizer, a person that one went to for advice, support and balance. Bob loved to cook and barbeque, and having a meal at the Benz house was a special occasion. Later in life, Bob became involved in commercial real estate, selling and managing buildings and running his own company in Del Mar, Pacific Real Estate Group. Bob made many friends in real estate. Bob is survived in life by his wife, Sonny Benz of La Jolla; stepsons, Lance, Matt and Grant Milbrand; as well as ten grandchildren and three cousins. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the University of St. Thomas, 2115 Summit Avenue, Mail # Dev, St. Paul, MN 55105 or UC Regents C/O Donations for Pulmonary Hypertension Program, 9300 Campus Point Drive, La Jolla, CA 92037-7381. Services will be held on Thursday July 30, 10:30am at Saint Brigid Catholic Church, 4735 Cass Street, Pacific Beach, CA. Private inurnment will be held at Fort Rosecrans at a later date.

I want to thank the 1959 reunion committee for giving me one of their reunion books.  It is the finest and most complete book to date.  It belongs in the Minnesota History center as an example of a really dedicated committee spending many hours putting together a comprehensive account of a school that produced so many productive members of our society.  I cannot say enough.  Any classmate that comes to our luncheon should bring along their copy to show it off to other classmates.  The 1959 Wilson Log shows 206 senior pictures.  Forty-seven members of the class should be remembered by all of us as they have passed away.

Dear Classmates,
The Wilson all classes lunch will take place on Wednesday, August 5th. We are going to hear from Ruth Ann Eide, of the St. Paul Police about protecting your homes from burglars.  Many of you live in more secure dwellings but have children living in single family homes.  The newest trick is to put a pizza box between your storm door and your entrance door.  Check for a couple days and if the box is still there, go around the back and break in.  Get the low down from Ruth Ann Wednesday.

From a friend in California
RIP Dave Mericle, Sr.
It is with a very heavy heart that I post this. One of our most enthusiastic local members, Dave Mericle, Sr. has passed away. Dave was diagnosed in February with throat cancer and despite a valiant effort, lost his battle with the disease yesterday. I have been told that he passed peacefully in his sleep. He has gone to join his fellow Alfisti at the finish line. Rest in peace, Dave.

In Loving Memory
February 1, 1935 to April 21, 2009 LCDR USN Ret.
An Officer and A Gentleman Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Dave came from hearty farmer stock. The United States Navy brought him out west and Dave's Naval Aviation career was spent at North Island Coronado, the Philippines and Point Loma. As a proud and deeply patriotic Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, Dave accomplished over 600 career carrier captures and was a member of the Tailhook Association. Dave's love for the California coast and his preference for always taking the "coastal route" drew him to settle in Leucadia, CA, with his soul mate and wife of 35 years, Terry. An exuberant member of the Vintage Auto Racing Association and proud Alfa Romeo enthusiast, Dave's love of racing formed many lifelong friendships within the racing community. A wonderful man with a very loving spirit, he deeply loved his family and friends, who admired him for his warm heart and kind soul. Dave is survived by his sister, three children, three step-children, ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and his loving dog Simba.
Funeral Services will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr., San Diego, CA 92101, (619) 553-2084, on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 2 p.m.
The class of 1952 will really miss Dave.  I know I will as I received many e-mails from him over the years concerning Navy flying and Naval business.

Dear Classmates,
Wednesday, May 6, is the first Wilson Luncheon in the spring of 2009.  Does that date us or does it not.  The lunch will be at the Old Country Buffet in Maplewood.  Most everyone is tired of reading this message with the address and other comments.  But here goes anyhow.  I had a classmate from 1963 send me a message and ask what our lunch is all about.  I had been explaining that the classes of the 50’s were becoming the majority attending.  Now we have the class of 1961 planning their 50th reunion.  Of course 59 and 60 come first.

Born in Duluth, MN, April 15, 1928, he grew up in St.Paul, MN. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1946 and served in the Air Force. Cleon began building apartments in 1957 and built thirty-five buildings in the St. Paul and Roseville Area. He began farming in the Stillwater area in 1976 and resided there until his death. Throughout his 80 years he was an avid outdoorsman and pilot. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine, of 58 years, five children; Bruce, Susan (John) Bragstad, Cheryl (Norm) Steen, Pam (Don) Bromen and Robyn (Tim) Casey, eight grand children and four great-grand children. I happen to have known Cleon when he was in high school.  My recollection was finding him painting a duplex on Rondo Avenue which he had rented out.  This was when he was in high school.  Of course his dad was a large landlord and he got advice first hand.  Before moving to Stillwater he lived on Lake Gervais.  This was where he kept his float plane.

I lost track of Jeanette Borsch after high school until one day in about 1973 when she came in to have lunch at my Mr. Steak with the Anchor Block Group.  I knew her as one of the select girls that hung around together at Wilson and were pursued by the all the good looking and not so good looking boys.  She was easy to get along with and would talk even if she wouldn’t consider a date with you.  From 1973 until 1987 when I sold the restaurant, I must have served her lunch several hundred times.  Some were at the expense of Anchor Block and some were on her own.  A great person who will be missed.
She sometimes would come in with Vic Burski, an employee at Anchor Block, who came in for lunch almost everyday.  He loved my choice of waitresses.  We got along very good as I soon found out Vic owned a Piper Cherokee.
In about 1980 Vic and Leo Cepeda, an owner of Truck Utilities Co. were flying to Chariton, Iowa to pick up one of the companies truck drivers.  About 20 minutes before arriving they had just completed having a sandwich when Vic complained he didn’t feel at all good.  Leo looked at a man with sweat beading out of every pore of uncovered skin.   Leo wasn’t a pilot having only a few minutes of handling the controls.  He said he would watch for the airport so Vic could shut his eyes and relax until they would have to land.  Twenty minutes later Vic managed to get the plane on the ground without crashing.  He had had a bad heart attack and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.  We had been talking flying and continued to have those conversations after Vic recovered quite a while later.  Don’t get me started on any more stories.

Many of you will not have to read much of these obits, But the last line will be to call, a Wilson past student and invite him to join the 57 classmates that came in January for a good lunch and lots of conversation.   Larry Carlson 1945

Dear Classmates,
The Wilson High School all classes lunch will be held Wednesday, January 7th at the Old Country Buffet in Maplewood.  Here in Minnesota the temps at noon are still below zero.  It is enough to scare away 50% of our classmates  The ones that are not already in the Southland are wondering about a trip to Las Vegas.  We do not have a forecast for next Wednesday but I am  still expecting 50 hardy Wilson Classmates to attend.  So get back in the habit and call a friend from Wilson or of interest to our classmates and come to the party.
Since the newspapers are reducing the amount of newsprint everywhere I guess I still have to send notices of our luncheon.  I missed last month, and some of you remarked about it, because we were in Denver for Thanksgiving, and I don’t carry a laptop with all 613 Wilson addresses in it.  Sorry about that.

In 1982 he became the Executive Director of the Colorado Education Association (CEA), and after that, he worked as an independent consultant in labor relations and collaborative bargaining. I asked Joanne Englund of Barney’s class if she was able to get to his memorial service.  Barney did the MC duties at his classes 60th reunion last fall.  At the time he knew he had cancer but did a good job at the reunion.  Here is what Joanne sent me.

Oh, boy, how to reply! Yes, I did attend. I met John King at the door
on his way to leave. I stayed for the service. The room was full of
gray-haired people. Barney's three boys spoke eloquently about Barney
as their dad with regrets that they didn't know him like his
professional peers did. Others who spoke were Barney's close friend,
Bob Black, and another person, Karl, I understood superintendent of
Mounds View Schools. They both had moving stories about his
professional side. I thought that the speakers did a remarkable job of
representing who Barney was to them and, together, painted a rounded
image of the complex and dynamic person that he was. I'm glad I stayed
for the service. I left before the luncheon afterwards, so didn't talk
directly with the family.  Joanne Wickoren Englund

Since I send these messages to so many people I get messages back frequently.  The following message was sent to me by Dave Mericle class of 1952.  I could not just delete it.  I think everyone of us at our age remembers one or several persons that served our country in bad times as well as good but they did their duty and we really should appreciate their sacrifice as often as we can.
You're an 18 or 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley, 11-14-1965. LZ Xray, Vietnam.
Your Infantry Unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the Medi-Vac helicopters to stop coming in.
You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.
Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see a Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.
Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.
He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses.
And, he kept coming back......13 more times..... and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.
Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died yesterday at 80.
THANK YOU Ed Freeman and may God Rest Your Soul.

I am also adding an E-Mail address which I hope some of you can read.  This is about a gun runner from Russia who has added probably thousands of deaths as a result of his selling arms to everyone and anyone.  Viktor Bout was captured and is being held as a terrorist to stand trial. A long but very interesting article.

If you did it, read this far, then call a classmate and invite them to the first meeting in 2009.

Fun StufF

(The following are simply pass ons.  No claims are made as to their accuracy or validity.  They have been placed hopefully for your enjoyment.)

FLASH!!!!!!!!
Men.  It is extremely important to understand the relevance of these 9 words/phrases that Women use.

1.  Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

2.
Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means 1/2 hour.  Five minutes is only five minutes if you have
just been given five more minutes
to watch the game before helping around the house.

3.
Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something, and you should be on your toes.
Arguments that begin with nothing usually end in
fine.

4.
Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!

5.
Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh
means she thinks you are an idiot and
wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you
about
nothing. (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing.)

6.
That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. That's okay means
she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

7.
Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or Faint. Just say you're welcome.

8.
Whatever: Is a women's way of saying F*** YOU!  ..well you know

9.
Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a
woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking  '
What's wrong?'

For the woman's response refer to #3.

Will Rogers, who died in a plane crash with Wylie Post in 1935,
was probably the greatest political sage this country has ever known.
Enjoy the following:

1.  Never slap a man who's chewing tobacco.

2.  Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.

3.  There are 2 theories to arguing with a woman...neither works.

4.  Never miss a good chance to shut up.

5.  Always drink upstream from the herd.

6.  If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.

7.  The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put
      it back in your pocket.

8.  There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading.
The few who learn by observation.  The rest of them have to pee
on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

9.  Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that
      comes from bad judgment.

10.  If you're riding' ahead of the herd, take a look back every
now and then to make sure it's still there.

11.  Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin'
it back.

12.  After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good
he started roaring.  He kept it up until a hunter came along
and shot him.  The moral:

When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut.

ABOUT GROWING OLDER...

First ~ Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about
your age and start bragging about it.

Second ~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting
in line for.

Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers.  Not me,
I want people to know "why" I look this way.  I've traveled a
long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back
to youth, think of Algebra.

Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either
dries up or leaks.

Sixth ~ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

Seventh ~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging
is that it is such a nice change from being young.

Eighth ~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the
day has been.

Ninth ~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

Tenth ~ Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks,
it was called witchcraft.  Today it's called golf

And finally ~ If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have
anything to laugh at when you are old.

ONLY IN AMERICA:

Only in America do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in America ......do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.

Only in America ......do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Only in America ......do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

Only in America ......do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

Only in America ......do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'.

Only in America ......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

Do you EVER WONDER....

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?

Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with
real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money, called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn't there mouse flavored cat food?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes?
Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?

If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

 Exercise for Seniors
I came across this exercise suggested for seniors, to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders.
It seems so easy, I thought I'd pass it on.  Since I am getting older myself, I think I will give it a try.
The article suggested doing it three days a week.
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have  plenty of room at each side.
With a 5-LB. potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides, and hold
them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, then relax.
Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.  After a couple of weeks, move up to
10-lb. potato sacks. Then 25 -lb. potato sacks, then 50-lb. potato sacks, and then eventually try to get to where
you can lift a 100-lb. potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.
Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

THIS IS TOO FUNNY FOR US OLDIES...

Two elderly Walmart greeters were sitting on a bench during break time
and one turns to the other saying, "I'm 73 years old and I'm just full of
aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?"

The other greeter says, "I feel just like a new born babe."  Rather amazed, the
coworker repeats his statement back in the form of a question.

"Really? A new born babe???"

"Yup.  No teeth.  No hair.  And I think I just wet my pants."

These are cute - enjoy

It used to be only death and taxes were inevitable.  Now, of course, there's shipping and
handling, too.

A husband is someone who, after taking the trash out, gives the impression that he just
cleaned the whole house.

My next house will have no kitchen - just vending machines and a large trash can.

A blonde said, "I was worried that my mechanic might try to rip me off. I was relieved when
he told me all I needed was turn signal fluid."

I'm so depressed.  My doctor refused to write me a prescription for Viagra.  He said it
would be like putting a new flagpole on a condemned building.

My neighbor was bitten by a stray rabid dog.  I went to see how he was and found him writing
frantically on a piece of paper. I told him rabies could be cured and he didn't have to worry
about a Will.  He said, "Will?  What Will? I'm making a list of the people I want to bite!"

Definition of a teenager? God's punishment for enjoying sex.

As we slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.

When I was young we used to go "skinny dipping," now I just chunky dunk."

The early bird still has to eat worms.

The worst thing about accidents in the kitchen is eating them.

Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

Wouldn't it be nice if whenever we messed up our life we could simply press 'Ctrl Alt Delete'
and start all over?

Why is it that our children can't read a Bible in school, but they can in prison?

Brain cells come and brain cells go, but fat cells live forever.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rodeour bikes, we had
no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but
we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot
the brakes. After running into the bushes a few  times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on cable,
no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell
phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat.........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside
     and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and although wewere told it would happen,
we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live in us forever.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and
     talked to them!
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with
     disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!
You had the luck to grow up as kids,
before the lawyers and the government
regulated our lives for our own good.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors,
doesn't it?!

LET US HEAR FROM YOU SOON!!!!
