Charles E. Cheney

Cherished Husband, Father Grandfather, Brother and Friend Age 66, Shoreview, MN. Born June 16, 1943, died September 12, 2009. Chuck's family and many friends sadly bid farewell to a truly exceptional man. Toward the
end of his career, Chuck took up the practice of law. He returned to law school over thirty years after first
attending, obtaining his degree at the age of 61. He did most of his work pro bono, tirelessly helping friends,
family and very often near strangers in difficult situations calling for the commitment and expertise he brought to
his entire professional life. Prior to becoming a lawyer Chuck spent his career with several companies, working
first as a C.P.A. and then in executive roles, most recently spending two decades with Navarre Corporation as Chief Financial Officer and board member. One of Chuck's greatest passions was the annual Mike Cheney Golf Tournament, held every June in memory of Michael Cheney, Chuck's oldest son who died in 1987. Chuck poured his heart into the event, and has
left a legacy because of it. Through an endowment created from the proceeds of the tournament, many young people have and will continue to be able to experience Camp Widjiwagan, a wilderness camp in northern Minnesota. Chuck will be remembered as a
man with boundless energy and an adventurous spirit, qualities that led him to a vast array of pursuits: cross-country biking, skiing, marathon running, golf, canoeing, rafting, scuba diving, trekking the globe, and forever seeking the next great adventure. Chuck's greatest pleasure came from inviting others to join him and deepening his connection with them through these shared experiences. Chuck was also, and most of all, a wonderful friend and companion. He was charismatic, humorous and loved being at the center of attention, but was also a warm and devoted friend who loved to converse about anything. Chuck's family will miss their most ardent and loving supporter: he succeeded in life so that he might help them; he sought their happiness impartially and with an open mind; and he broadened their horizons through his sense of possibility and adventure. Chuck is preceded in death by his father, Burt, his mother, Louise, his step-mother, Rena and his beloved son Michael Charles. Chuck is survived by his wife of thirty years, Arta; his sons, Paul (Jessie), Tedd (Addie) and Jed; his brothers, Jim (Fran) Cheney and John Vong and his sisters, Mary Ann (Bob) Evander and Jean Marie Vong. Chuck leaves three grandsons, Nicholas, Louis and August Cheney. Visitation 4-8PM Tuesday, September
15 at HOLCOMB-HENRY-BOOM, 515 Hwy 96 at Mackubin, Shoreview (651-482-7606). Funeral service 11AM Wednesday,
September 16 at BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH, Roy and Shields Ave, St Paul. Interment Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Camp Widjiwagan Mike Cheney Memorial Fund YMCA.

Michael Joseph Podulke
July 30, 1943 - February 23, 2011

Michael is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Stephanie June; daughters, Heather Marie (Daniel Simmer and Ursula Simmer); Laurel Elizabeth Podulke (fiancée Edward Martin Jeffries, Edison Allen and Elissa Ann Jeffries); siblings, Peter (Georgiana) Podulke, Lawrence (Catherine) Lambert, Mark Owen Lambert, Judith Marie (Stephan) Fischer, Roger Eliot (Cynthia) Lambert, Robert Alan (Lynn) Lambert, Stephen (Judy) Podulke, Olga Marie (Ted) Landaal; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was born to Elizabeth and Michael Podulke in Minneapolis. Michael graduated from Wilson High School in 1961 where he enjoyed playing football, shot-putting, pole-vaulting, playing basketball and throwing discus.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1964. He was trained in electronics and radar detection and served in the underwater radar detection unit. After the Navy he worked at Control Data Corporation for 12 years.

In 1965, he married the love of his life, Stephanie June Crow. They lived in New Hampshire for three years, moved to Italy for two years, and then the Netherlands for two years where Heather was born. He worked with and studied stained glass there. In 1976, they moved to Rochester and opened Rochester Stained Glass.

Mike ran for and was elected to be a county commissioner in 1986 and subsequently was re-elected to that position six times. On the county board, he was known as a strong advocate for vulnerable and disadvantaged children and citizens. In addition to his service to the community, Mike enjoyed many other crafts, including blacksmithing, book-binding, wood-carving, glass-blowing, weaving, spinning, whittling, flint knapping and paper-making. He was a wizard at Scrabble, chess, bridge, poker, board games and any kind of brainteaser. When Michael was in an especially good mood, he turned thoughts into songs. One of Mike’s hobbies was whittling little gnomish figures which he would leave in places all over the U.S. and Europe, hoping that children would find them and think they were magical. He did this for over 20 years. Michael was a lifelong recycler and repurposer. He was curious about everything, and he read voraciously. Michael wrote, designed, made the paper for, printed and self-published a book, Life in the F.A.S.T. Lane: the Ramblings of an Adult Survivor of A.D.D. and Other Misnomers.

He enjoyed organizing colorful, outrageous events such as Boar's Head Feast, full size maypoles, the Mayo Civic Center Opening Ceremonies with the balloon launch, Winter Festival Outdoor Scrabble Tournament, and served as a consultant on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”

Mike and Stephanie had a vision of how to help the community heal from the raw emotions of 9/11. They translated that into a design and a community project for a beautiful set of stained glass panels at the Rochester Civic Center in memory of the victims of 9/11. The labor involved in building it included over 500 volunteers from the Rochester area. Mike and Stephanie's stained glass creations are installed in numerous Rochester and Byron churches.

Michael was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Fraternity.
Among the many honors he received were: Committee on Urban Design and Environment; Rochester Convention and Visitors Bureau Hometown Hero Award, Mayor's Award for Community Service, Cambodian American Friendship Award, Zumbro Valley Medical Society Public Service Award and the Mayor's Legacy Award.

Some of his friends referred to him as rustic philosopher, and his family remembers him as “Big Joe.”

A memorial service will be held in the new River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Carol Hepokoski officiating. Visitation preceding the service from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to either The Unitarian Universalist Church Boiler Fund, 1727 Walden Lane SW, Rochester, MN or Olmsted County Crisis Nursery, 2116 Campus Dr SE, Rochester, MN.
Online condolences are welcome at

William (Bill) Ashton

ashton_paper_pix.jpg                                        William “Bill” Ashton died peacefully at Dougherty Hospice House on February 13th, 2009
from complications associated  with  ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Bill was born in St. Paul, MN on July 14th, 1943 to William F. and Gertrude J. Ashton.

After graduating high school in 1961 he joined the Navy where he spent some time stationed in
                                                       San Diego
, CA, spent several months on the submarine tender Nereus.  And finished his naval career
as a Naval Dental  Technician stationed in Bethesda
, MD.

In July of 1964 he left the Navy and moved back to St. Paul, MN where he took a job with St. Paul Structural Steel at
an entry-level position.  Shortly thereafter, he enrolled at the University of
Minnesota.  After many years of attending night courses,
he received his Bachelors of Civil Engineering degree in 1983.

Over the 19-years that he spent working at St. Paul Structural Steel he moved up the ladder to one of the top positions
in the company.  Unfortunately, many steel companies, including St. Paul Structural, closed in 1983.  In September of 1983 he
accepted a position as Production Manager for Egger Steel Company in Sioux Falls
, SD.  After spending 20-years with Egger
Steel, he started his own structural steel detailing business which grew into a successful company.

He was also quite involved with the American Institute of Steel Construction.  He was a member of their certification
committee for over 20-years.  They recently honored him with the Special Citation Award because he played a key role in
developing standards that ensure safe steel structures.

He had many proud accomplishments in life, one of which was the hole-in-one that he hit on July 7th, 2005 on the
17th hole at Prairie Green Golf Course.

Bill’s passions were traveling, golfing, scuba diving, flying, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and spending
time with his family.  Bill had a passion for life- living each day to the fullest.  He was known for his wonderful sense of humor
and his appreciation for life.

Bill was a very caring person, a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and a wonderful friend to all who met him.

Survivors include his wife Judy, his sons William Jr. and Steven (Kristine), his siblings Richard, Carol Ashton McMahon,
Charles (Jeanne) and Michael, his stepchildren Chad (Nicole) Schilmoeller and children Luke and Brooklyn
, Nicole (Tom) Benning
and children Ashley and Austin, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
